Vaccines, hygiene could stop diarrhea deaths: U.N

Diarrhea causes one in five child deaths across the world but getting important vaccines to Africa and Asia could help save many lives, two U.N. agencies said on Wednesday.

Some 1.5 million children die each year from diarrhea, — more than AIDS, malaria, and measles combined — yet only 39 percent of children with diarrhea in developing countries get the right treatment, the World Health Organization and the United Nations children’s fund UNICEF said in a report.

Vaccinations against rotavirus, the leading cause of severe gastroenteritis with vomiting and diarrhea in babies and children, as well as better sanitation and proper rehydration treatment would help solve the problem, they said.

Rotavirus causes around 40 percent of hospital admissions from diarrhea in children under five worldwide, according to the report, and vaccination against it has recently been recommended for all national immunization programs.

Only a few, mostly developed and richer nations include rotavirus vaccine in routine childhood immunization programs, but the WHO has been working to make two vaccines — Rotateq from Merck & Co and Rotarix from GlaxoSmithKline — more widely available in developing countries.

“Accelerating its introduction in Africa and Asia, where the rotavirus burden is greatest, needs to become an international priority,” said the report.

It also said two mainstays of diarrhea treatment — zinc supplements and low-osmolarity oral rehydration salts — are still hard to come by in many poorer countries.

“We know what works to reduce child deaths from diarrhea and what actions will make a lasting reduction in the burden of diarrhea,” Tessa Wardlaw of UNICEF and Elizabeth Mason of the WHO said in a commentary in The Lancet medical journal.

Program eases trauma of chemotherapy side effects

When Michele VonGerichten started chemotherapy to treat her breast cancer, one of her big worries was that her newly bald head would distract attention as she tried to carry on with her marketing job.

“It was just devastating to me, the thought of losing my hair,” said the marketing and public relations executive for a boat manufacturer in Florida.

“I have to meet with customers and dealers. And with my co-workers … I wanted to make sure they were going to be looking at me and focusing on me, and focusing on what I was helping them with … and not staring at my head, or looking at my face and asking ‘Why do you look so different?'”

VonGerichten found help from Look Good … Feel Better, a national public service program that helps women cope with the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment.

Like 1 million other people around the world who have taken part in the free program over the last 20 years, VonGerichten received a kit of makeup and took part in a two-hour group workshop given by a volunteer beauty professional.

“There were women of all ages … . They were all in various times of their treatment,” she said. “But it just felt like, OK I’m not alone here, there are other women going through this.”

Look Good … Feel Better is a collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the Personal Care Products Council Foundation — the charitable arm of the $250 billion personal care industry’s main trade association.

Executive Director Louanne Roark said the program began after a doctor asked the former president of the Personal Care Products Council to help one of his cancer patients who was so self-conscious about the side effects of her treatment that she would not leave her hospital room.

Senate panel backs healthcare reform

Senate panel backs healthcare reform

A key U.S. Senate committee endorsed a sweeping healthcare overhaul on Tuesday, gaining the support of an influential Republican and delivering President Barack Obama a victory on his top domestic priority.

The Democratic-controlled Senate Finance Committee approved the measure on a 14-9 vote, with Senator Olympia Snowe becoming the first Republican in Congress to back a healthcare reform bill.

“Today we reached a critical milestone in our effort to reform our healthcare system,” Obama said after the vote, warning there were still big challenges ahead for healthcare reform.

The bill, the last of five pending health measures to clear a committee in Congress, will be merged with the Senate health panel’s version in the next few weeks for a full Senate debate and floor votes.

Snowe, who had been courted by Obama and his fellow Democrats, said she still had reservations about the overhaul and could not guarantee her continued support as it advances.

“My vote today is my vote today. It doesn’t forecast what my vote will be tomorrow,” Snowe said.

Health insurer companies stocks fell on fears reform was gaining steam and would hurt profits if it passed. The S&P Managed Health Care index of large health insurers was down 1.9 percent.
